Long Island Sound is a fantastic place to visit any time of the year, but it’s particularly magical during the summer. You can stroll around the coastal nature centers or explore the historic lighthouses. And if you’re into adventure, you might want to consider an exciting fishing charter or some kayaking or other water sports.

With all the fun going on, you may not pay enough attention to protecting your mouth, and this could result in a chipped tooth.

Let’s take a look at what to do if this happens to you.

You Chipped a Tooth: What Now?

Chipped teeth are a common dental issue, and it’s important to call our office for advice if you find yourself in this situation.

In the meantime, here’s what you can do:

  • Save any broken pieces, and bring them with you when you visit us. Store them inside your cheek or in a glass of milk.
  • If you’re bleeding, apply pressure with gauze or a clean washcloth. The bleeding should stop after a few minutes.
  • To protect your gums, tongue, and lips from injury, cover your chipped tooth with sugarless gum or dental wax.
  • Your chipped tooth may not hurt, but if it does, it’s fine to take an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can also apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek. This will numb the area and reduce any swelling.
  • Be sure to avoid eating anything hard, such as nuts, popcorn, or jerky. Also, don’t chew on the affected side of your mouth.

Possible Treatment Options

Depending on the severity, we may recommend one of the following treatment options:

  • Smoothing and polishing
  • Dental bonding
  • Dental crown or veneers
  • Root canal therapy
