Periodontal Treatment in Lindenhurst, NY

Did you know gum disease affects millions of Americans and often goes untreated? Unfortunately, gum disease can often go undetected until it advances and harms your oral and overall health. Because your oral health is directly linked to your body’s systems through what’s known as the oral-systemic connection, getting regular dental checkups and cleanings is essential to detecting and treating gum disease and keeping you healthy.

However, if you have gum disease, the expert dental team at Pearly Place Dental can help with periodontal treatment. Our periodontal therapy and maintenance are aimed at helping you restore your oral health. In turn, you may be able to decrease your risk for serious health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection that occurs when the bacteria in your mouth turn to plaque and remain on your teeth for an extended time. Eventually, this plaque becomes a harder substance known as tartar, which only a dental hygienist can remove. If left untreated, your gum disease can advance to the point where it weakens the bones that hold your teeth in place, causing tooth loss.

The most common signs of periodontal disease are as follows:Woman holding her lip down with gum disease, Lindenhurst NY

  • Swollen, red, or inflamed gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Teeth that feel loose
  • A change in your dental bite

Why Is Early Detection of Gum Disease Helpful?

Early detection of gum disease allows for more successful periodontal treatment in Lindenhurst, NY. Here are some additional benefits.

May Be Reversible

The earlier we spot signs of gum disease, the better your chances are of successfully reversing your condition.

Less Invasive

Treatment for gingivitis is much easier and typically less costly than treating advanced gum disease (periodontitis).

Overall Health

Treating gum disease early improves your overall well-being, as it's linked with diabetes and heart disease.

Periodontal Treatment from Pearly Place Dental

There are two stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. At Pearly Place Dental, our treatment protocol for gum disease includes the following:

Gingivitis

In the early stages of gum disease, we can perform a professional dental cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth and around your gums.

We will work with you to improve your dental hygiene techniques to avoid further issues and keep your gums healthy.

Periodontitis

If your gingivitis progresses and becomes periodontitis, our goal is to help you keep your teeth, so we provide the following treatment options:

  • Scaling and root planing – For this procedure, we remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth above and below the gumline. Then, we smooth the root’s surfaces to allow your gums to reattach to your teeth and prevent further infection.
  • Periodontal maintenance – If scaling and root planing aren’t enough to control your periodontitis, other treatment options are available. If necessary, we can prescribe antibiotics to help eliminate any remaining infection or perform an irrigation treatment where we use liquid antiseptic medications to flush out the pockets in your gums.

Both of these treatments can help you maintain good gum health by eliminating the bacteria between your teeth and gums.Man receiving periodontal treatment, Lindenhurst NY
